Counselling for Separating / Divorcing Couples

Counselling Programs can help people who are separating and/or divorcing, to deal with their grief and anger; so they can move forward with a sense of purpose and plans for the future.

Counselling may help you to:

  • Look at the changing nature of your relationship.
  • Manage the grief and loss associated with a relationship breakdown.
  • Assess the real value of anger.
  • Identity a pathway for separation.
  • Learn about acceptance and ways to attain it.
  • Gain the strength to consider a new and sustaining relationship.
  • Learn that if necessary, it is okay to be single again.

Counselling and working through the problems of separation with someone who has no personal involvement can help people through this difficult time.

In reality, many people live happy, fulfilled lives following a relationship breakdown. Some people choose to re-partner and many do not. There is no right or wrong way; it’s a choice.

As children grow, they need to find themselves. They need to explore and learn things in order to master skills. In doing so, they go back and forth between testing themselves and sometimes others, including their own parents.

Trying new things and the friends they choose may cause children to go against parental restrictions. We parents are constantly balancing between encouraging growth and limiting risk while maintaining expectations for safety and good behaviour.

Children may respond to things differently than adults do. Parents need many different approaches, as the same thing may not always work.

Reflective listening by parents encourages children to talk through their problems. Parents show respect for the child’s ideas by commenting on them with interest and by asking leading questions. This can be easier said than done, especially if you do not particularly like your child’s ideas.

Adolescents often avoid talking in depth with their parents, so there is not much to reflect. Also teens can carry experimentation and confrontation to extremes. At such times, parents need considerable self-control to remain calm and firm, to act as adult role models.

Let Happy Again Counselling help get your child’s life back on track and help you to restore your relationship with them.

Talking Therapy and Counselling

Talking therapy and counselling involves talking about your problems with a trained professional who can help you explore the causes of your anger and ways to manage it. This can help you work through your feelings and improve your responses to situations that make you angry.

There are different types of talking therapies, and some are specifically tailored to anger issues.

  • You might talk through a specific issue – such as outbursts of anger with your partner or in the workplace and we can help you to try to understand how you could manage those situations differently.
  • We tend to go deeper into your past experiences. Your focus here may be on learning more about yourself to help you understand why you express your anger the way you do, or why certain situations make you angry.
  • We examine how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours affect each other and we teach you practical skills on how to change.
    • Counselling is usually a short-term treatment where you might talk through a specific issue such as outbursts of anger with your partner or in the workplace and try to understand how you could manage those situations differently.
    • Psychotherapy often lasts longer than counselling and tends to go deeper into past experiences. Your focus here may be on learning more about yourself to help you understand why you express your anger the way you do, or why certain situations make you angry.
    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is highly structured short-term talking therapy that examines how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours affect each other and aims to teach you practical skills to change.

When you undergo stressful events, your body will respond as though you are in danger. You then release adrenalin which creates:

  • Rapid breathing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Burst of energy

When stressful events occur over a prolonged period, your body begins to release stored sugars and fats from its resources. At this stage you:

  • Feel driven to keep doing more
  • Feel pressured and overwhelmed
  • Are often tired, fatigued and have trouble sleeping
  • Drink more coffee, alcohol and smoke more
  • Experience memory loss
  • More susceptible to illnesses

If the stressful events do not subside, you become chronically stressed. Your body’s need for energy exceeds its ability to produce it. You then experience:

  • Insomnia
  • Errors in judgement, like a careless or costly decision on the job
  • Extreme irritability
  • A vulnerability to developing a serious illness like heart disease or a chronic illness

Happy Again Counselling can help you:

  • Think more optimistically about events
  • Help you find more balance between your work and your life
  • Find time to do the things you really want to do
  • Help you regain permission to play and have fun
  • Set boundaries and stay in control of your workload
  • Regain a sense of humour
  • Help you master self-care strategies

Negative, critical, fearful, and anxious thoughts are crucial stress factors.

Anxiety occurs when we run into stressful situations. We experience it every day, since living in the modern world is quite stressful. We need to make deadlines at work, think about how to fit things in, or face challenges from others. We normally automatically adjust our anxious condition back to a more relaxed status very quickly. When we are able to get out of the stressful situation, anxiety basically begins to reduce. Nonetheless, the anxiety can become easily triggered in our daily lives and make life very difficult for us. In this case, it is challenging to be our relaxed self and perform as who we really are. It might be caused by a traumatic incident, or gradually form in our nerves system as a habitual reaction.

Let Happy Again Counselling help you with your anxiety.

  • Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)

Depressed feelings are a natural emotional reaction when we encounter difficulties that knock us down from feeling our regular self. We normally will automatically adjust our depressed mood back to a calmer status. It may take a couple of hours or a few weeks, depending on how well our adjusting system works. However, sometimes when the difficulty is greater than our self-adjusting system, we will be out of emotional balance and stay in the depressed mood for a longer period of time. In that case, we do not know how to get out of our depressed feelings. That is when we seem to get stuck with depression.

After children have been diagnosed with ADD, the next question parents typically ask is “Now what? What do we do to help our child?”
Like many things, treating your child’s ADD is not a one-step decision. Many parents ask about medication, what the school can do, if the child can outgrow or learn strategies to help, and if parents can do things to help. All of these approaches are appropriate components of a treatment plan for ADD. Successful treatment of ADD tends to be multi-faceted. Each child and each family is different and therefore, the treatment plan needs to be individualized.

What treatment approach would you like to focus on first?

  • Individualized Program Plan

  • Parenting Strategies

  • Behavioral Therapy with the Child

  • Diet

  • Improving Sleep

  • Including More Physical Activity/Sensory Strategies

People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) have persistent, upsetting thoughts (obsessions) or rituals (compulsions). For example, if people are obsessed with germs or dirt, they may develop a compulsion to wash their hands over and over again. If they develop an obsession with intruders, they may lock and relock their doors many times before going to bed. Being afraid of social embarrassment may prompt people with OCD to brush their hair compulsively in front of a mirror-sometimes they get “caught” in the mirror and can’t move away from it. Performing such rituals is not pleasurable. At best, it produces temporary relief from the anxiety created by obsessive thoughts.

Other common rituals are a need to repeatedly check things, touch things (especially in a particular sequence), or count things. Some common obsessions include having frequent thoughts of violence and harming loved ones, persistently thinking about performing sexual acts the person dislikes, or having thoughts that are prohibited by religious beliefs. People with OCD may also be preoccupied with order and symmetry, have difficulty throwing things out or hoard unneeded items.

Healthy people may also check to see if the stove is turned off. The difference is that people with OCD perform their rituals even though doing so interferes with daily life and they find the repetition distressing. Although most adults with OCD recognize that what they are doing is senseless, some adults and most children may not realize that their behavior is out of the ordinary.

Symptoms may come and go, ease over time, or get worse. If OCD becomes severe, it can keep a person from working or carrying out normal responsibilities. People with OCD may try to help themselves by avoiding situations that trigger their obsessions, or they may use alcohol or drugs to calm themselves.

OCD often responds well to treatment with exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy, in which people face situations that cause fear or anxiety and become less sensitive to them.

Let Happy Again Counselling help you with your OCD.

Some of your fears might include one or more of the following:

Social Phobias / Fear of Public Speaking

Social phobias are the most common type of fear.

They are considered an anxiety disorder and include excessive self-consciousness in social situations.

Some people can fear being judged so much they avoid specific situations, like eating in front of others.

Up to one in 20 people have a social phobia.

Acrophobia; Fear of Heights

Some people fear heights so badly the escalators at the local shopping centre give them vertigo.

Vertigo is different to the phobia and is the sense of dizziness people can develop.

For others a cliff-top lookout or a tall building makes their head spin.

Thanatophobia; Fear of Death

More specifically, it can be a fear of death or a fear of the dying process. It’s natural for someone to worry about their own health as they age.

Pteromerhanophobia; Fear of Flying

With all the media coverage of air disasters it is understandable many fear being in a plane crash and hence have a fear of flying.

But with more than 100,000 commercial flights around the world each day, the chances of being struck by lightning are higher than dying in a plane crash.

Claustrophobia; Fear of Enclosed Spaces

Sometimes the fear of flying is actually more closely linked to a fear of enclosed spaces.

People with this fear say they feel like the walls are closing on them.

Some theories suggest there is a genetic link to specific phobias as a kind of dormant survival mechanism.

Agoraphobia; Fear of Open Spaces

While it is generally understood to be a fear of open spaces, agoraphobia is a much more complex fear.

It is a serious anxiety disorder than can trap people in their homes or make leading a normal life next to impossible.

Some people with agoraphobia avoid specific places or venues.

Let Happy Again Counselling help you overcome your fears and phobias.
